Administrators get a pay raise almost every year. Should teachers receive the same level of pay raise as their leaders? Which one is the most important for the classroom?
Politicians are proposing large increases in teacher salaries. One politician has called for an average raise in teacher pay of $13,500. Will that guarantee better education for students?
What would a raise in teacher salaries accomplish? Many believe raising teachers’ salaries will result in better learning for children. Higher teacher salaries might increase teachers’ effort. When teacher salaries are low, teachers may get a second job. This reduces their energy and effort at teaching. Texas ranks in the lower tier of states in teacher pay but is the highest in football coaches and administrators pay. Administrators, especially superintendents, are in the top tier of salaries. Higher teacher salaries might increase learning if they draw more of the best and brightest college graduates into teaching.
