Grandfather of the passing game

Over the last 30 years, football coaches have moved from the heavy runoriented offenses to the Air Raid passing game. Hal Mumme, former Copperas Cove High School coach from 1986-88, is credited with developing the new style offense. The Air Raid passing game is almost the exclusive offense in the professional and collegiate levels. High school coaches use the zone option, run-pass-option scheme, which is basically the Air Raid offense.

The offense is credited being started in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, at Iowa Wesleyan University. The Air Raid offense developed over the years from the fringes of college football to some of the biggest programs in the country. Today, it is the basic offense.
