Funeral services for Gray, Fidler Saturday
Funeral services for a mother and daughter from Copperas Cove are Saturday at Lea Ledger Auditorium.
Sherry Gray, 64, and Shelly Gray Fidler, 36, were killed last Friday in Temple by Fidler’s boyfriend, Matthew Splittsgerber, who also shot and wounded Fidler’s 4-year-old son Corden Fidler. Splittsgerber then killed himself.
Corden Fidler remains in a Temple hospital. He was shot four times, according to media reports, including once in the head. He has undergone surgery and a Go Fund Me account has raised close to $25,000 as of Wednesday.
Shelly Fidler had sought a temporary protective order against Splittsgerber, according to media reports. She had moved out of Fidler’s house and had moved in with her parents.
Gray retired as a Copperas Cove teacher after 34 years. She was a 1973 Copperas Cove High School graduate.
Fidler was a Lampasas High graduate and was a teacher in the Belton school district.
Gra+y was born Nov. 9, 1954, in Killeen to Hansford Bernard Smith and Sibyl Cordie Brooks Smith.
After graduating from CCHS, she attended Central Texas College in Killeen, the University of Texas in Austin and Tarleton State University of Stephenville where she received her bachelor’s of science degree. She later attended the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton and Tarleton where she received her master’s degree in 2000.
Gray leaves behind her husband, Robert Larry (Bob) Gray of Troy; her grandson Corden Fidler of Temple; a sister, Tina Sherese Smith Warlock; a son by marriage, Mathew Paul Fidler; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fidler was born Aug. 8, 1982, in Killeen. Shelly graduated from Lampasas High School with the Class of 2001 and received her bachelor’s of science degree from Tarleton State University with honors.
She was a physical education coach at BISD.
Fidler is survived by her son Corden and her father; two aunts, Warlock and Lanell Gray Jackson; and numerous cousins.
The Gray family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 5-7 p.m. today at Crawford-Bowers funeral Home in Copperas Cove. The memorial service is at 1 p.m. at Ledger Auditorium on the Copperas Cove High School campus.
