Lamar Awards

Masons honor two CCHS students, teacher at annual ceremony

Three members of the community were celebrated Tuesday night at the Mount Hiram Mason Lodge, where each received the prestigious Lamar Award of Excellence.

The award, given annually by local lodges to an educator and two students, originated in 1988, and is so called after Mirabeau B. Lamar, a Mason who was a dedicated member of the community and helped build Texas public education in the 1800s during his term as the first vice president of the Republic of Texas in 1836 and as the second president of the Republic of Texas in 1838. At his urging, the state legislature passed an act in 1839 to set up a public-school system.
