Voters going back to polls for runoff election in late May

Voters will go back to the polls in May for decide several elections.

None of the candidates in the District 59 state representative race received the required 50 percent plus one mark, requiring a runoff between Dr. J.D. Sheffield and Shelby Slawson. Slawson received 2,621 (36.95 percent) votes to Sheffield’s 2,537 (35.77 percent). Cody Johnson received 27.28 percent of the vote, or 1,935 votes.

The primary runoff election will be May 26 with early voting running May 18 through May 22. Early voting sites remain the same, the Copperas Cove Early Voting Center at 508 B Cove Terrace Shopping Center and the Coryell County Annex at 801 E. Leon in Gatesville. The polls are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for May 19, when polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
