Copperas Cove History
Copperas Cove has not always been a powerhouse in football, and my husband Pap played many of those inglorious years. I’m sure he learned some valuable lessons during that time like, “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game,” but he’s not so sure. He has entertained me with his small-town-football stories.
The year was 1958 and Pap was on the Copperas Cove freshman team. There was no coach. But the school district did provide transportation. Mr. Cecil Smith, who taught social studies, was the driver. Milford Wiley was quarterback and he called the plays. No other adult than Mr. Smith came along with the freshman Bulldogs.
